Florin Giuglescu has established a formidable reputation over the past 30 years as one of the leading tennis teachers in the New York City metropolitan area.

As head coach of both the Baruch men's and women's tennis teams, he has compiled a record of success rivaled only by the star power of his client list.

He has been named the 2004, 2008 and 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for leading his young student-athletes to championship seasons.

His men's team have won the CUNYAC Championships in 2000, 2002, and 2004 through 2009 in dominant fashion. They repeated as champions again from 2012 to 2014 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in two of those years.

In addition, with the men winning the 2007 championship, they earned CUNYAC's first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. They made the most of their first NCAA appearance by defeating Alvernia, 5-4, in a first round thriller played on the campus of Swarthmore College.

He was named the CUNYAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2015, and led the Bearcats to their first  CUNYAC Championship since 1997, with an undefeated fall season record of 13-0.

In all, Florin has won a total of 13 CUNYAC championships (11 men, 2 women) at Baruch College.

The success of the program has not only been on the court, but in the classroom as well, as a large number of his student-athletes have been named CUNYAC Scholar-Athletes. The 2006 women's tennis team also featured a cumulative GPA of 3.44, and # 1 singles player Kateryna Pylypyshyna (3.98 GPA) was twice named to the ESPN The Magazine District I - College Division All-Academic Second Team.

Giuglescu first came to Baruch in 1978, taking the reins of the men's tennis program until 1987. From 1980 to 1993, he was the sports director at Premier Vertical Club, where he worked with two former NCAA #1 players (Bill Scanlon #9 world, Tim Mayotte #8 world). He returned to Baruch in fall of 1996 to coach both the women's and men's teams.

The accomplishments of the 2002 men's team earned them a full-page article in the New York Daily News.

A Life Member of the United States Professional Tennis Registry and a Master Pro with the United States Professional Tennis Association, Giuglescu has taught both top-notch pros and absolute beginners with equal enthusiasm and effectiveness.

His professional pupils have included the likes of Barbara Potter, Silvia Hanika, Tim Mayotte, Yannick Noah and Bill Scanlon. His list of amateur students, however, is still more impressive: Mike Lupica, Peter Jennings, Bill Cosby, Dustin Hoffman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, and President George H. W. Bush have all taken past lessons from the Bearcat mentor.

He has also coached on the high school level at Dwight, Trinity and United Nations High School (U.N.I.S.). In 2013, he started the first men's varsity team at U.N.I.S.

A native of Bolgrad, Romania, Giuglescu immigrated to the United States in 1973 and became an American citizen in 1979.

He is the holder of bachelor of science and master of science degrees in physical education from the University of Bucharest (Romania), and has also studied at NYU and Columbia University. He has a Ph.D. in Biomechanics Studies, Sports Psychology.

Florin is a lecturer in the department of psychology at Baruch College.

As a player, he was ranked between 28th to 36th in the United States, and #3 in the USTA Eastern Over-40 Division between during 1983-1993. He won the Monte Carlo Doubles 35s in 1986 and reached semifinals for 40s Forest Hills Tournament in 2000.

Giuglescu speaks four languages fluently and can read in three others.
