John begins his seventh season as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Coordinator.
Last season (2017-18), the Bearcats won 16 games and reached the posteason again with an ECAC berth.
The 2014-15 season under Alesi was one of the best in team history with 21 wins and the team's first CUNYAC Championship Title since 2000. The Bearcats also played in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in their history.
For his outstanding efforts and leadership, Alesi was voted the 2014-15 CUNYAC Coach of the Year that season and regionally was honored as the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Coach of the Year.
During the 2015-16 season, the team returned to the CUNYAC Championship Title Contest by winning three games as a No. 5 seed to play again in front of a national audience on ESPN3. The Bearcats finished the season in the ECAC Postseason Tournament and reached the semifinal round.
Alesi was promoted to Head Coach on March 7, 2012. He joined the Baruch staff in June 2011 and spent his first year as "Head Coach in Waiting" before his promotion.
He is a 2003 graduate of Baruch College with a bachelor’s degree in marketing management. He returned to Baruch following stints as an assistant coach with the Division I staffs at the University of Pittsburgh (2005-06), Hofstra University (2003-2004), and Manhattan College (2006-10).
He also served as the Head Coach of rival Hunter College during 2010-11 and led the Hawks to the semifinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship Tournament.
As an undergraduate at Baruch, Alesi played four years at guard and led the team to their first CUNYAC Championship in 2000. He can now claim a Baruch men's basketball championship as a player and head coach.
As a senior in 2003, he captained the Bearcats to their first-ever ECAC Metro Regional Championship and was named MVP of the post-season tournament as the team finished with a team best record of 25-5.
Alesi has served on the ECAC Metro Region Men's/Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Committee and is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
