The Dolphins from the College of Staten Island hit total eight–pointers and turned the ball over only nine times to defeat the Baruch Bearcats, 72-60, in a CUNYAC contest on Wednesday night in Staten Island.

Staten Island finished the first half with a 12-5 run to help them build a 40-30 advantage at halftime.

The visiting Bearcats battled back and got as close as six points (52-46) on a jumper by George Kunkel (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) with 12:30 remaining, but Staten Island kept responding with solid shooting to pull out the 72-60 victory on their home court.

Phil Schatz (Middle Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) led Baruch this evening with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Tammer Farid (Woodside, N.Y./Stuyvesant) scored 11 points, while Laurence Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass) contributed 10 points.

Staten Island had five players in double-digit scoring, led by Robert Mesjasz (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) with 18 points (3-5 3fg), seven rebounds and three steals.

The Bearcats will return to action on Friday with an 8:00 pm home contest against the Cougars from Medgar Evers College. Please note the revised start time.

Prior to the game against Medgar Evers, the annual men’s basketball alumni game will take place in the main gym.
