Box Score

The men’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 match to Medgar Evers College in the regular season finale on Wednesday night at the Met Oval in Queens.

Despite the loss, the Bearcats clinch the third-seed in the postseason conference tournament and finish their 2008 fall schedule with a 7-4-4 overall record.

The third-seeded Bearcats will play sixth-seeded Medgar Evers again in the CUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 29th.

As the higher seed, Baruch will be the home team at the Met Oval (Time TBA). The overall tournament pairings will be announced within the next 48 hours by the CUNYAC office.

The visiting Cougars led from start to finish this evening and took a 2-0 lead with Kwami Adissou and Shard Sullivan scoring in the 14th and 25 minutes respectively on counter attacks.

The Bearcats cut the deficit to one on a goal by Aykan Yurdacan with only 30 seconds left in the first half. Valiantsin Kirykovich created the scoring chance with a well placed cross field pass on a counter attack that enabled Yurdacan to calmly collect the pass and score the goal.

The Bearcats, who emptied most of their bench in the second half to give everyone some action on a cold night in Maspeth, worked hard for the tying goal, but the Cougars responded with well played goals in the 70th and 77th minute to put the match out of reach.

Nelson DiBastiano and Michael Murphy played 45 minutes each in front of the goal and each totaled four saves.

Medgar Evers led in the shot category, 20-18, in a high intensity match full of attacking soccer with a solid sportsmanship total of only seven fouls from both teams.

NOTE OF INTEREST: The Bearcats are ranked #8 in the latest Metro Region Poll of the top Div. III schools in New York/New Jersey (POLL).
