Freshman Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) pitched a 3-hitter to record her 15th victory, and sophomore C Idelissa Lluveres (Bronx, N.Y./Aquinas) hit an RBI single to score freshman 3B Ashley Brandow (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) with the winning run in the fifth inning to give the Baruch Bearcats a 2-1 victory against Mount Saint Vincent in opening round ECAC Metro playoff action on Wednesday afternoon in Staten Island.
With their first-ever postseason victory, the Bearcats (23-22 vs. Div. III) advance to the ECAC Metro double-elimination tournament this weekend at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, New Jersey.
The fourth-seeded Bearcats will open play against the top-seed Richard Stockton College in the opening game this Saturday morning at 10:00 am. The Bearcats and Richard Stockton previously split a doubleheader on April 24 (Richard Stockton 1, Baruch 0 in extra innings; Baruch 3, Richard Stockton 2).
The fifth-seeded Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent finish their season with an 18-18 record.
The Dolphins scored first in their top half of the second inning. Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) led off the inning with a long double to left field and came around to later score on a fielding error for the early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats struck back in their bottom half of the second inning with senior OF Cynthia Duran (New York, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) scoring on one of four fielding error committed by the visitors from Riverdale, New York .
Baruch took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning with Brandow hitting a long double that bounced off the top of the left field fence. Lluveres brought her home with a single to right field for what stood as the game-winning hit.
Tepfer (7IP, 3H, 9K, 0ER) took control the rest of the way to record the victory in a pitching duel that also saw her opponent Megan Gonzalez (Fisher, Indiana/Hamilton South Eastern) pitch well with a score line of seven innings, one earned run, two strikeouts and six hits allowed.
