Women's Volleyball Split in CUNYAC Multi-Match; Defeat York, Lose Tough Four-Set Showdown to Hunter

The women’s volleyball team split their two conference opening day matches on Saturday at the CUNYAC Multi-Match hosted by Lehman College.

In the morning match, the Bearcats (4-4) started with a 25-19, 25-5, 25-23 sweep of York College.

Kristin Walker (Fayetteville, Arkansas/Fayetteville) led Baruch with 25 assists and three service aces, while Nicole Baruffaldi (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) notched nine kills and eight digs. 

Posey Wilson (Fayetteville, Arkansas/Fayetteville) recorded a team-high 14 digs.

Charlina Gallegos (Mexico City, Mexico/Hillcrest) led the Cardinals of York College with 10 assists. 

In the afternoon match, the Bearcats lost a tough showdown to Hunter College by the scores of 16-25, 25-15, 19-25, and 23-25.

Walker helped lead the offense again with 30 assists, while Mayra Estepan (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Francis Lewis) had nine kills and 12 digs in a solid all-around effort. 

Wilson finished with 22 digs (36 total today), Baruffaldi had six kills and 12 digs, and Staren Soanes (Dominica, West Indies) and Berbelin Jape (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Walton) finished with seven kills each.

Hunter, which rallied in the fourth set with the final five points to overturn a 23-20 deficit into a 25-23 clinching victory, was led by Olga Petrenko (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies) with 13 kills and eight digs. 

The women’s volleyball team will return to action this Tuesday with a conference match against John Jay College of Criminal Justice. First serve at home in the ARC Arena is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
