Softball Takes Two from Rutgers-Newark (4-3, 3-0)

The Baruch College Bearcats went on the road Tuesday to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader from Rutgers-Newark in Newark, New Jersey.

With the two victories, the visiting Bearcats even their record at 7-7, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-11 on the regular season.

In the opening game victory (4-3), the Bearcats jumped on the scoreboard first with a home run by freshman Melanie Pellegrino.

They added a run in each of the next two innings to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Melissa Pena had the game-winning RBI with a ground out to score Pellegrino in the top of the third inning.

The Bearcats added an insurance run in the sixth inning with freshman Gisell Alix hitting an RBI single to right field to score Pena.

Sophomore Lynn Schiano notched win #3 on the season with five innings pitched, seven strikeouts and only one earned run allowed. Freshman Cristina Arce recorded the save by finishing out the sixth and seventh innings.

In the second game, sophomore Andrea Tepfer pitched a complete game, five hit shutout with nine total strikeouts to post a 3-0 victory.

The visiting Bearcats scored their first run in the top of the third inning. Pellegrino was involved in the action again with an RBI single to score freshman Vianka Nieves.

The Bearcats scored twice in the sixth inning to help break open a close game. Sophomore Michele Runko hit an RBI single to score Pena. Runko would come around to score the third run on a fielding error for the eventual 3-0 final.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, March 28, with a Noon time CUNYAC road doubleheader against John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The doubleheader will be played at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, New York.
