Coaches vs Cancer Classic: Baruch 72, Yeshiva 50

The men’s basketball team defeated the Maccabees of Yeshiva University, 72-50, in a Coaches vs Cancer Classic game played on Sunday afternoon at Lehman College in the Bronx.

The Maccabees (2-9) from the Skyline Conference scored the first five points, but the Bearcats rallied to tie the non-conference contest at 9-9. The Bearcats ended the first half with a 22-12 run to take a 31-21 halftime lead.

At the start of the second half, they continued their momentum and scored 10 of the first 12 points to build an 18 point (41-23) advantage with 17:29 left.

Yeshiva battled back to get as close as 43-30 with 14:58 left, but Baruch responded again by scoring the next five points to go back up again by 18 points (48-30) with 13:24 remaining in regulation.

The Bearcats (6-3) finished the game shooting 51 percent (27-53), including 59 percent (16-27) in the second half, to record their sixth victory of the regular season and end a two-game losing streak.

Yeshiva shot 40 percent (17-43) from the field, but could only connect on 2-of-12 three-point attempts the entire game.

Sean Loftus led the Bearcats with 19 points (8-10 fg), six rebounds and two steals, while Lionel Hilaire had 17 points (5-7 3fg) and dished out six assists. Chris Beauchamp finished with 10 points.

Dovie Hoffman led Yeshiva with 15 points and three steals. Omer Haim recorded 12 points (4-8 fg), five assists and four steals.

The men’s basketball team will now enter the final exam break and will return to the court on Saturday, January 1 (New Years Day), 2011, by competing at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Bearcats will battle the hosts Embry-Riddle Eagles on January 1, with tip off scheduled for 7:00 pm. Embry-Riddle, a Division II affiliated member of the NAIA, is currently the #5-ranked team in their division.

The next day, Sunday, January 2, at 2:00 pm, the Bearcats in the tournament will battle the current #1-ranked team in NCAA Division III Wooster University of Ohio. 

The first week of the New Year will also see the Bearcats battle John Jay (away, Jan. 5), rival Hunter (home, Jan. 7), and an exciting road game on Saturday, January 8, in New Haven, Connecticut against NCAA Division I and Ivy League member Yale University.
