The softball team defeated their rival Hunter Hawks by the scores of 5-1 and 4-1 in a CUNYAC home doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the College of Staten Island softball complex.

Freshman Nicole Flint pitched a 5-hitter and allowed only one earned run with 13 strikeouts to help lift the Bearcats to the opening game 5-1 victory.

Hunter (8-6, 4-2 CUNYAC) scored the first run during their first at-bat, but the Bearcats (11-15, 6-0 CUNYAC) went on to score a run in each of the first and third innings, followed by three more runs in the fourth inning to complete the victory.

Melissa Pena battled a perfect 3-for-3, with two runs scored and an RBI. Idelissa Lluveres also went perfect at the plate by batting 2-for-2, with a double and RBI single.

The second game featured a pitching duel with the two teams unable to score during the first five innings that only lasted under an hour to play.

However, Hunter struck first in their top half of the sixth inning with Stephanie Alves smacking a solo home run to left field for the 1-0 advantage.

Hunter threatened to score again in the same inning with runners on second and third base and only one out, but Andrea Tepfer struck out the next batter and forced a ground out to shut down Hunter from any additional scoring.

The offense erupted for the Bearcats in their bottom half of the sixth inning with the team scoring four runs on four hits, while also benefiting from two Hunter fielding errors, to take the 4-1 lead.

Pena had the big hit again with an RBI single to score Elizabeth Santos to tie the score at one. Flint hit an RBI ground out and Lluveres smacked an RBI single during the pivotal 4-run inning to help the team sweep Hunter for the first time.

Tepfer pitched the complete game 6-hitter with six strikeouts to help clinch her win #8 of the regular season.

The softball team will continue their CUNYAC schedule on Tuesday, April 13, with a 3:30 pm doubleheader against York College to be played at Haggerty Park in Jamaica, New York.
