The Bearcats and Dolphins split a CUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday in Staten Island, New York.

With the results, the Bearcats now sit in first place this late in the season for the first time in team history. They improve their record to 15-17 overall and 9-1 in CUNYAC, while CSI is 16-12 overall and 8-2 in CUNYAC.

The home team College of Staten Island Dolphins won the opening game with a 13-2 mercy rule victory. They totaled 13 runs on 10 hits and quickly led 11-3 after three innings to eventually record the five inning victory.

The visiting Bearcats scored their two runs in the second inning. Melanie Pellegrino hit an RBI single to score Andrea Tepfer. Pellegrino came around to score the second run on a pair of errors by the Dolphins.

The second game featured an exciting pitching duel between rookie Nicole Flint and CSI pitcher Danielle Ponsiglione (who pitched both games of the doubleheader), but Flint came out on top with a complete game shutout  (7IP, 4H, 4K) to lift the Bearcats to the 1-0 shutout victory.

Ashley Brandow hit an RBI single to score Melissa Pena in the first inning for the only run during the second game of the doubleheader.

The softball team will return to action on Thursday, April 22, with a 3:00 pm non-conference road doubleheader against Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.
