Softball Team Lose DH to New Jersey City (7-3, 5-1)

The softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Thursday afternoon in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The visiting Bearcats lost by the scores of 7-3 and 5-1.

In the first game, the Gothic Knights from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a run scored in the first and third innings.

The visiting Bearcats responded with a run scored in the fifth inning with
Melanie Pellegrino hitting an RBI double to score Julia Giustiniani to cut the score to 2-1.

The Gothic Knights scored three runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth for a 7-1 lead, but the Bearcats attempted a major rally in their final at-bat.

Olivia Auman smacked an RBI single up the middle to score Pellegrino and Auman would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch to cut the score to 7-3. Unfortunately, the team could not produce any more runs as the Gothic Knights recorded the non-conference victory.  

Overall, the Gothic Knights scored seven runs on 10 hits, while the Bearcats scored three runs on seven hits.

In the second game, the Bearcats were able to get on the scoreboard in their first at-bat as Giustiniani hit an RBI single to score
Ashley Brandow for the early 1-0 lead.

The Gothic Knights scored five runs on six hits, highlighted by a three run homer by Marisa Bariso in the fifth inning.

The Bearcats were unable to score in their final two at-bats to suffer the 5-1 second game loss and doubleheader sweep.

Overall in the second game, the Gothic Knights (11-11) scored five runs on six hits, while the Bearcats (3-9) had one run on seven hits.

The softball team will return to action and begin their CUNYAC schedule on Saturday, April 9, with a 12:00 pm road contest at Randall’s Island (Field #12) against rival Hunter College.
