For the second consecutive year and sixth time in team history, the women's volleyball team won the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship by defeating rival Hunter College in five exciting sets on Friday night at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The championship tournament was scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 30, with quarterfinal round matches at higher seeds, but due to Hurricane Sandy, the matches were postponed. As the stormed worsened, Baruch immediately became an evacuation shelter and school was closed the entire week.

Baruch was unable to host the semifinal and champion round matches on Friday, November 2. As a result, CUNYAC scrambled and was able to secure the facilities of CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium to start and finish the tournament.

The Bearcats, unable to practice all week, swept Lehman in their semifinal match with scores of 25-18, 25-11, 25-17.
McKenzie Davidson (.350) and Rebecca Peralta (.400) led the attack with 11 kills each.

For the third straight year, Baruch and Hunter met to play for the championship.

The Bearcats started slow and found themselves quickly down 2-0 with scores of 25-18 and 25-23. However, they were able to bounce back with scores of 25-11 and 25-19 to tie the match.

That forced the exciting fifth set and the Bearcats were able to squeeze out a 17-15 victory for the championship on the neutral site of CCNY. The victory stretched the team's overall (regular & tournament) CUNYAC win streak to 22 win in a row.

In an interesting side note, the men's volleyball team defeated Hunter 3-2 this past spring in a comeback after trailing 2-0 in the championship. The women's result against their rival was the same being down 2-0 and coming back to win 3-2.

Jessica Wu was named Championship Tournament MVP after totaling 20 kills and 14 digs against Hunter. Michelle Stommes
had her finest match with a career-high 16 kills (.364) and 15 digs. Peralta was busy again with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Melinda Santiago, who had an impressive 50 assists in the championship match, joined Stommes being named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bearcats will discover their NCAA opponent on Monday, November 5, at 11:00 am via a video at NCAA.com.
