Baruch 5, Washington & Jefferson 4 BOX SCORE

Susquehanna 5, Baruch 4 BOX SCORE

The softball team produced two very encouraging results on Friday at the Seagull Invitational hosted by Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland.

In the past, the results of this weekend invitational have not been so kind to the team, due to the yearly high level competition, but this year, Baruch’s young roster has held their own down in Maryland.

The softball team began by recording a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory in extra innings over Washington & Jefferson College in a non-conference game played on Friday morning.

The Bearcats trailed 4-3 entering the eighth inning, but rallied with two runs for the victory.
Carmen Pagan-Colon had the winning hit by smacking a double to right field to score Toniann Donde.

Nicole Flint recorded the first team win of the season by pitching eight solid innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run, to defeat an opponent from the President’s Athletic Conference.

Washington & Jefferson initially jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the bats came alive for the Bearcats in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Toniann Donde, one of the top rookies in the metropolitan area, smacked her second home run of the season to centerfield to score another successful rookie Chelsea DeGuzman.

The Bearcats tied the game in their final at-bat of the seventh inning as Nicole Flint dramatically scored from third base on a fielding error.

Washington & Jefferson scored in the top of the eight for a 4-3 advantage and that forced the Bearcats to play catch up again in their final at-bat.

Melanie Pellegrino doubled to score Chrystal Sanchez to tie the game, and Pagan Colon had the important hit with a double to score Donde for the victory.

In the second game, the Bearcats played very strong and almost recorded one of the biggest comebacks this weekend at the invitational, but fell just short to suffer a heart-breaking one run loss.

Susquehanna, a member of the Landmark Conference in softball, jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings, but the Bearcats erupted for four runs in the sixth inning.

Megan Ruiz began the big inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Regina Cardinale. Kimberly Hernandez hit an RBI single to bring home Ruiz for a 5-1 score.

Two batters later, Chelsea DeGuzman would hit a two RBI single to score
Kimberly Hernandez and Melanie Pellegrino for a 5-3 score. The Bearcats were not finished and added another run as Toniann Donde scored from third base on a wild pitch to get as close as 5-4.

Unfortunately, the Bearcats could not generate any more runs and finished with a 5-4 loss.

They will return to action on Saturday morning with a tough 10:00 am contest
against #3 nationally-ranked ranked Christopher Newport from the USA South Athletic Conference, followed by a 2:00 pm contest against Frostburg State from the Capital Athletic Conference.
