Rutgers-Newark Take Two From Bearcats

The softball team lost a tough non-conference doubleheader to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday evening in Newark, New Jersey.

The Bearcats lost by the scores of 6-3 and 10-9 to drop to 12-24 overall, while Rutgers-Newark from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) improves to 16-21 overall.

In the first game,
Chelsea DeGuzman, Toniann Donde and Olivia Auman had two hits each, but it was not enough as Rutgers-Newark scored six runs on nine total hits for the 6-3 home victory.

In the second game, Rutgers-Newark jumped to a 7-0 lead and was up by as much as 10-3 in the seventh inning.

However, the visiting Bearcats never gave up and almost pulled off a dramatic rally in their final at-bat. They scored six runs on two hits with the benefit of four errors by Rutgers-Newark to cut the score to 10-9, but could not get any closer to suffer the heart-breaking loss.


Courtney White batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI. Megan Ruiz was perfect batting 4-for-4, with one run and RBI. Olivia Auman and Nicole Flint scored two runs each.     

The softball team will finish their regular season schedule on Tuesday, May 1, with a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader at Manhattanville College. First pitch in Purchase, New York is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

The team will begin the CUNYAC Playoffs on Wednesday, May 2, against John Jay.
