Women’s Volleyball Avoids Upset Bid by Staten Island, Win in Five Sets

The women's volleyball team needed five sets to defeating the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats (3-0 CUNYAC) started out by comfortably winning the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-14, for the 2-0 lead.

The visitors responded in the third set hitting .407 to pull out a 25-22 victory. They continued the momentum in the fourth set and quickly led 18-12 en route to a tight 25-23 victory to force the tie-breaking fifth set.

The Bearcats recovered their hitting with
Sydney Parks and Rebecca Peralta each notching four kills, while McKenzie Davidson added three kills and one ace to pull out the difficult 15-12 fifth set victory for the home conference win.

Amy Sung was influential in the victory with 17 digs and Crystle Dela Cruz dished out a career-high 55 assists.

Peralta, the CUNYAC Player of the Week for the second time, totaled 17 kills hitting .314. Parks finished with 15 kills, while Davidson had 13 kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks.

The Bearcats totaled 65 kills hitting .245, while the Dolphins (1-2 CUNYAC) finished with 39 kills, most of them in the third and fourth sets, with a .185 hitting percentage.

The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday in the ARC Arena with a highly-anticipated home match against rival Hunter College Hawks at 6:00 pm. Prior to the match, the athletic department will host a pre-match tailgate party for Baruch fans and students.
