Softball Team Hosts New Jersey City in Home Opener

The softball team hosted their first home doubleheader of the season on Thursday afternoon at Randall's Island Field #12 in the Bronx, New York.

The Bearcats lost both contests (19-3, 11-3) to a non-conference opponent from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).

In the opener, the Bearcats scored their three runs on a season-high seven hits.


Kristen Podlovits brought home the first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly RBI to plate Jacqueline Gioia.

Gioia in the fourth inning would later smack a two-run single to score
Christina Chin and Maria Vlahopoulos.

Gioia finished with two hits and two RBI.
Luzmary Sanchez recorded her season debut and batted 2-for-2 with a run scored. Olivia Auman finished with a single.

In the second game, the Bearcats scored three runs again on five total hits.

Auman and Vlahpolous each scored in the first inning on a fielding error.
Courtney White began the play with a single and the two runs came around to score as New Jersey City committed an error in trying to throw Auman out at second base.

Auman would also hit an RBI single in the third inning to score Chin for the team's third and final run on a comfortable day to play softball at Randall's Island.

The softball team will return to action on Sunday with a CUNYAC doubleheader at York College. First pitch at Padavan-Prellers Fields in the Bellerose section of Queens, New York is set for 12:00 pm.
