Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Three With Five Seconds Left Defeats Bearcats in Connecticut Monday Night

The men's basketball team lost on a long three with five seconds left to suffer a 91-89 non-conference contest to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College on Monday night in New Haven, Connecticut.

Sophomore guard Chaunce Dunbar hit a game-winning three-pointer to lead the Falcons past the visiting Bearcats at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.

On a broken play, Dunbar collected a pass from freshman point guard Ryan Pittman and launched a high arching shot from well beyond the arc that hit nothing but net for the victory in the first meeting between the two schools.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-2 on the year, while the visiting Bearcats saw their two-game winning streak come to an end to move to 8-6 overall.

The game did not begin well as the Falcons quickly jumped out to a 20 point lead (31-11) midway through the first half.

The Bearcats did manage to rally against last year's Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champions (GNAC) by cutting the deficit to nine at halftime (46-37). They continued the momentum at the start of the second half and took the lead of 57-56 with 13:22 left on a layup by
Doyin Isaac.

They continued their solid play with a 16-6 run, highlighted on a three by rookie
William Sixsmith with 8:53 left, for their biggest lead of the night at 73-62. Sixsmith later nailed another three to keep the lead at 11 (78-67), but it would be short lived as the Falcons battled all the way back with a rally that ended with the winning shot on a three with under five seconds left.

Chimaechi Ekekeugbor, who was honored today with Doyin Isaac for CUNYAC Weekly Basketball Honors, led the Bearcats with 24 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Isaac had another all-around effort with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Edward Roscigno scored a season-high 14 points and Sixsmith finished with 10 off the bench.

The Bearcats will resume conference action on Wednesday, January 13, with an enticing 7:30 pm CUNYAC home contest against first place Lehman College (10-4, 5-1 CUNYAC).
