FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 3, 2018)
- On Thursday, top-seeded Baruch College and second-seeded Hunter College resumed their Lexington Avenue rivalry in the 2018 CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Men's Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing.

The Bearcats, who faced off against the Hawks for the title for a fifth-straight year, won by a 5-2 decision to capture their second-consecutive championship.

Despite faltering at No. 2 doubles, Baruch took two of the three flights to grab an early 2-1 cushion. Graduate
Jaime Zurro and senior Marco Gobbato won a hard-fought 8-5 contest over graduate Florimond Le Goupil-Maier and sophomore Nasser Ghaffar in top pairs.

Then, at third doubles, junior
Leonard Margolis and freshman Clement Lacoudre knocked off Hunter's Filip Koritysskiy and Omer Khalifa, 8-4.

"It was just about getting out there and getting loose. We started out really tight and it got us ready for singles," said Gobbato about the team's doubles play.

In singles, Zurro quickly beat Ghaffar in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 1 flight, and junior
Lewis Pena battled to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory against Joel Cantila at the No. 4 position to move the Bearcats within a win of clinching the title.

The tournament's Most Valuable Player, Gobbato would eventually seal it for Baruch with a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set win over Sean Kemp at the No. 2 flight.

"It's a great win. I gave 120 percent. Everyone on the team gave 120 percent," stated Gobbato. "I am graduating with a win. It is really nice."

"It's just a dream come true," Zurro commented. "I am really proud of my teammates. This win goes out to everyone who has been pushing us to win."

"It's exciting. It's nice to get this win today, especially with the hot conditions," said Baruch Head Coach Gregory Wyzykowski. "It was rewarding to know that our guys pulled through, when it could have gone either way."

The Bearcats now await their fate, after earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The selection show will air on Monday, May 7 at noon on NCAA.com.
