Bearcats Sweep CCNY in CUNYAC & Home Opener

The baseball team began their CUNYAC and home schedule on a winning note with a doubleheader sweep of the Beavers of CCNY on Sunday afternoon at Bronx Community College.

The Bearcats rode their starting pitching with senior Matthew Lawlor and rookie Nathaniel Demchak pitching compete games in the 6-1 and 5-2 conference wins.

The second game was very challenging with steady light snow at times, but not long enough to disrupt action.

HIGHLIGHTS

Game 1

* Lawlor went the distance on the mound with a line of seven innings, five hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts for the conference victory.

* The visiting Beavers took the lead in their first at-bat on an RBI double by Sardar Kahnblivardi, but Lawlor kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the game.

* Robert Wakely quickly scored the tying run in the second inning on a fielding error. What stood as the winning run came in the fourth inning on an RBI ground out by Thomas Drouin to plate Lucius Paradiso to make it 2-1.

*They added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth behind RBI's from Nicholas Umile (hit by pitch), Luke Lombardi (walk), Brian Hwang (walk) and Paradiso (hit by pitch) to raise the score to 6-1.

* The Bearcats only had three hits, but were smart at the plate getting nine walks.

* Natanael Castillo made a tough play in the fifth inning to catch a pop up to shallow left field to kill a Beavers' rally with the bases loaded to keep the score at 2-1.

Game 2

* Demchak pitched the win going the distance with seven innings, six hits, two runs, three walks, and a solid 11 strikeouts.

*The Beavers scored again first in their opening at-bat, but the Bearcats set the tone with a run in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to jump ahead 4-1.

* Joseph Cocozza plated the first run with an RBI single to score Umile.

* Wakely and Luke Lombardi (2-for-2) each had RBI singles in the third inning. Cocozza scored the fourth run on a fielding error in the fourth inning.

*CCNY got a run back on an RBI walk by Xavier Grobbel to make it 4-2 with no outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but Demchak retired the next three batters to shut them down despite the steady snow.

* Castillo smacked an RBI double to center field to score Michaal Paray for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
