Baseball Split DH with CCNY, Bearcats Now 6-2 in CUNYAC

The Bearcats and Beavers of CCNY split a CUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the College of Staten Island baseball complex.

The Bearcats won the first game in a comeback 9-8 for a walk-off win in seven innings but fell in the second in eight innings 2-1.

The results give the Bearcats a 6-2 record in CUNYAC for first place after this weekend, while CCNY is second at 5-3.

The Bearcats trailed 8-2 after four innings in the opener. but rallied back scoring the last seven runs for the victory.

Roy Longarzo (4-5, 2 runs) and Joseph Cocozza (4-5, 1 run) had the hot bats, while Andrew Horyczun batted 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Bearcats went into their last at-bat down 8-7 but rallied with Jake Ourvan walking and Horyczun hitting a single for two runners on base. Cocozza reached on an error by third base, enabling Ourvan to score the tying run.

Pedro Tejada, Jr. then stepped up and hit an RBI single past third via a big hop to plate Horyczun for the winning 9-8 walk-off run.

Jack Miller earned the win in long relief (3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

In the second game, a pitcher's duel broke out between the Bearcats' Jeremy Ramirez and CCNY's James Dean Johnston.

The Bearcats scored first as Cocozza reached base on a double and later came around to score when he stole home for the 1-0 lead.

The Beavers tied it in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Michael Chasanov. The contest remained tied and went to extra innings as Chasanov recorded his second RBI single in the eighth inning to go ahead 2-1.

Ourvan singled to try to get a rally going in the bottom eight but the Bearcats fell short 2-1 for the second doubleheader split this season against CCNY.

Ramirez suffered a tough loss despite an outstanding pitching effort (8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 B, 2 K).
