WBB Advances to 2nd Place in CUNYAC with Close Home Victory over Brooklyn (66-63)

The women's basketball team won a nail-biter in a battle for second place in CUNYAC against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs on Tuesday evening in the ARC Arena.

With the 66-63 victory, they hold a 9-9 overall record, a 6-2 CUNYAC record, and an impressive six-game winning streak.

The Bearcats played strong defense to take their first lead of the game (17-14) with 0:50 remaining to end the first quarter.

For the majority of the evening, the squad led their opponents by at least two possessions. The first half closed with the Bearcats in front at 32-29.

In the fourth quarter, they scored baskets off of intense plays on defense.

The game was tied at 48 until Mia Castillo came up with a steal and a fast-break layup with 8:20 left to take a 50-48 advantage.

This play by Castillo kickstarted a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead (58-50). Brooklyn would later cut the lead to as little as four points (62-58).

The Bearcats held their ground as Lillianna Morales came away with a steal, which led to a huge mid-range jumper by Angela Bacarella to extend the lead to 64-58 with just over a minute left.

Despite a last-minute three-pointer by the Bulldogs, the team's fight on defense helped them secure the huge home victory to take over sole possession of second place.

Castillo finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, and six steals. Bacarella was diving for loose balls with five steals to go with eight points and six rebounds.

Morales had a near double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds and seven points. D'Andre McRae helped on the glass with seven rebounds along with eight points, all in the second half.

Alina Estrella scored 18 points for the visiting Bulldogs.

The next match up will be against the Beavers of CCNY on Friday, January 31, at Nat Holman Gymnasium with tip off scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
