The men's volleyball team went away to The APEX at Lehman College to play the Lightning in a CUNYAC matchup on Thursday evening. The Bearcats ended up with a tough loss 3-2 (22-25, 25-27, 25-15, 17-25, 4-15).
They now hold an overall record of 15-9 and a CUNYAC record of 13-1. They still own the top seed in the CUNYAC Tournament next week.
In the first set, the squad was down early 3-0 and it was a back-and-forth scoring affair. There were six ties, the last at 12-12, but Lehman pulled away late for the 25-22 opening set victory.
In the second set, the Bearcats took a 5-1 lead early, but the Lightning tied the set at 7-7. Both teams kept the margin close as there were 13 ties, which included 24-24. Lehman jumped ahead 25-24 but the Bearcats took the next three points thanks to two kills by Kairos Liang and a bad set to narrowly win 27-25.
The Bearcats took a 15-4 advantage coming out of the third set. The Lightning started going on a run of their own, but it was too little too late as the Bearcats dominated to win the third set 25-15.
In the fourth set, the teams were tied at four, but the Lightning went on a 7-2 run to jump ahead by five points. That proved to be crucial as the Bearcats could only get as close as three points (12-9) as Lehman tied the match at two sets by winning 25-17.
The Lightning got off to a double-digit lead early on in the tiebreaker set 11-1 to win 15-4 for their first victory against the Bearcats since the early 2000s.
