Softball Splits DH at Mount Saint Vincent

The Bearcats and the Dolphins from the University of Mount Saint Vincent played a doubleheader on Thursday night at the Division I softball complex at Fordham University in the Bronx. 

The visiting Bearcats started strong in the first game, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Bridget Campanelli. 

They scored another run in the second inning on the Kaitlyn Belfield RBI single and one more in the third on a hit by pitch to Milagros Arias with the bases loaded for a 4-0 lead. 

The Dolphins rallied back, scoring the next five runs, including three in their final at-bat, for the 5-4 walk-off victory. 

The second game was a pitchers' duel, and Bearcat rookie Reina Castro-Johnson led the way with a complete game of seven innings, three hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts for a 2-1 victory. 

The Bearcats broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Ava Lavery and Leilani Jimenez to lead 2-0.

The Dolphins cut the score to 2-1 on a homer by Mirabla Sandez in the fifth inning.

Castro-Johnson then retired the next nine batters in a row for the 2-1 winning result.
