Bearcats & CCNY Split First Two Championship Games, Longarzo Records 100th Career Hit

The CUNYAC Baseball Championship Tournament will go to a third game after the Bearcats and CCNY split on Saturday at SUNY Maritime's Reinhart Field.

CCNY won the first contest 5-3, but the Bearcats returned strong in the second game for the split, winning 9-4 to force the third and deciding game.

The Bearcats started strong in the first game, scoring two runs in the first inning on a Peter Marino RBI single, and he came around later to score on a passed ball.

CCNY tied the game in the second inning with two runs and added a run in the third inning to jump ahead 3-2. The score stayed that way until the seventh inning when the Bearcats tied it on a bases-loaded walk by Roy Longarzo

CCNY scored twice in the seventh inning on a Mike Savino two-run double for the 5-3 lead, and they held on to win the first championship game.

The Bearcats took control in the second game with a convincing 9-4 victory.

The game was scoreless until the Bearcats scored three runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Longarzo. They added three more runs in the sixth inning, and Joseph Cocozza smacked his sixth career homer in the seventh inning as the Bearcats cruised to the victory.

CCNY tried to keep it interesting, scoring four times in the ninth inning, but the Bearcats held on to force the tie-breaking third game on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m..

Joseph Bello pitched the last three innings of relief to tie the team record of five all-time saves.

Rookie Troy Vigilis continues his undefeated season, earning the win (6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) for a 4-0 season record.

Longarzo recorded two hits today, and with his homer in the second game, he joined the career 100-hit milestone club at Baruch baseball.
