Box Score

The men’s basketball team shot 57 percent (34-60) en route to 87-57 victory over the College of Staten Island in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Con Edison Championship Tournament on Sunday afternoon in the ARC Arena.

With the victory, the top-seeded Bearcats improve their overall season record to 22-4 and advance to the semifinal round to be played at CCNY on Wednesday, February 25, with a 5:30 pm contest against fourth-seeded Lehman College (defeated fifth-seeded City Tech, 70-62).

The College of Staten Island ends their 2008-09 schedule with a 6-20 record.

The Bearcats led from start to finish, and never gave the visiting Dolphins a chance to build momentum in trying to create an upset.

Staten Island struggled shooting only 29 percent (22-77), and found themselves quickly trailing, 24-9, midway through the first half.

“I told the team that defense and not allowing anything easy would be the key to winning the game,” said Head Coach Ray Rankis. “The team played with extreme focus and everybody from top to bottom did what they had to do to win the game.”

Lionel Hilaire led five total Baruch players in double-figures with 17 points and five assists, while Tammer Farid scored 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range.

Sean Loftus (5-5 fg) and George Kunkel each scored 12 points. Kunkel also finished with a double-double by grabbing 16 rebounds. Mickey Abbatiello had one of the finest games of his young career with 10 points off the bench.

Mike Pulci led Staten Island with a team-high 15 points. Jordan Young, the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, finished with 10 points.
