NECVA FINALS: Men's Volleyball Reach Semifinal for 1st Time, Upset #1 Rivier, Fall to Stevens

The men’s volleyball team recorded one of the best weekend’s in team history by stunning the top seed and #3-ranked Rivier College Raiders (30-28, 18-30, 30-27, 25-30, 18-16) in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament on Saturday in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

With the tournament victory, the Bearcats advanced to the semifinal round of the NECVA Tournament for the first time in team history. They also recorded their 34th victory, stretched their win streak to 13 matches, and in the process, also ended Rivier’s 30 match winning streak to drop their record to 33-2 on the season.

The Bearcats advanced to semifinal round later in the afternoon, but despite another solid effort, they lost to fourth-seed and #6-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in four sets (30-22, 30-15, 26-30, 30-24).

The Bearcats started the tournament on Friday night by sweeping Medaille College of Buffalo in three sets (30-28, 30-15, 30-23) in the first round. The victory at that time was only the second in team history that Baruch ever won a first round match in the NECVA Tournament.

Fourth-seeded Stevens Tech will battle second-seeded Nazareth College of Rochester, New York on Sunday at 1:00 pm for the automatic berth into the NCAA Final Four on April 18-19 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey.

Baruch 3, Medaille 0

CAMBRIDGE, MA (Friday, April 3)…No. 8 seeded Baruch College swept No. 9 Medaille College, 30-28, 30-15, 30-24, in the first round of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championship Tournament on Friday at Rockwell Gymnasium. The win was the first for the Bearcats (34-9) in their last eight tournament appearances dating back to 1998 and will put them up against top-seeded Rivier College in a quarterfinal match on Saturday at 11:00 am The Mavericks closed their season with a ledger of 15-15.
 
Danial Levent led Baruch with 10 kills and seven digs and Pablo Oliveira added nine kills. Radu Wyrwas compiled 24 assists, five digs, and three blocks while Eryk Kowalski notched a match-high six blocks. Gabriel Rivera contributed five digs in the Bearcats’ win.
 
Ryan Murdie totaled 10 kills and six digs as Tom Kotrys posted seven kills and five blocks for Medaille. Andrew Nawotka registered seven kills and four digs while Ryan Maxwell collected 27 assists, five digs, and five blocks.

Baruch 3, Rivier 2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Saturday, April 4) – The first major upset of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championship Tournament came in a quarterfinal battle between nationally-ranked No. 3 Rivier College and No. 8 seeded Baruch College on Saturday.

Following a back-and-forth battle, the Bearcats emerged with a 30-28, 18-30, 30-27, 25-30, 18-16, victory against the top-seeded Raiders. Baruch (35-9) will continue its run in a semifinal pairing with either Endicott College or Stevens Institute of Technology later in the day. Rivier closed its season with a ledger of 33-2.

Pablo Oliveira paced the Bearcats with 20 kills to go along with eight digs. Gabriel Rivera notched 15 kills, a .355 hitting percentage, and eight digs as Danial Levent posted 15 kills and six blocks. Eryk Kowalski registered 11 blocks, followed by seven from Radu Wyrwas and four by Matt McKee. Wyrwas dished out 52 assists while Levi Rachmanov collected 10 digs.

Jared Andreozzi recorded 32 kills, a .418 hitting performance, and five blocks as Austin Soucy tallied 24 kills, nine digs, five blocks, and two aces. Matt Ferreira totaled 11 kills and five blocks while Zach Hansen compiled 68 assists, 11 digs, and four blocks. Andrew Corwin chipped in 10 digs and four blocks as Scott Wright finished with 12 blocks.

Stevens Tech 3, Baruch 1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
(Saturday, April 4) – No. 4 seed and nationally-ranked No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology registered a 30-22, 30-15, 26-30, 30-24 victory over No.8 seed Baruch College to advance to the final of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championship Tournament. The Ducks (24-6) will take on No. 2 seed and nationally-ranked No. 5 Nazareth College in Sunday’s title match.

Stevens showcased a solid hitting performance, registering a team mark of .349. Joe Trinsey tallied 19 kills, a .444 hitting percentage, 11 digs, and three blocks as Andrew Cranford notched 18 kills and four blocks. SteFan PremDas posted 12 kills, a .529 hitting effort, 11 digs, five aces, and three blocks while Tomas Bochicchio added 13 kills. Brandt Grobeis totaled 59 assists as Doug Reger chipped in five blocks.

Danial Levent powered Baruch (35-10) with 21 kills, a .422 hitting percentage, eight digs, and four blocks. Pablo Oliveira compiled 14 kills, a .357 hitting performance, and nine digs as Gabriel Rivera registered a team-high 12 digs. Defensively, Levi Rachmanov totaled 11 digs while Eryk Kowalski chipped in three blocks. Radu Wyrwas dished out 42 assists for the Bearcats.
