#4 Baruch 3, Hunter 1 (28-30, 30-22, 33-31, 30-27)

The #4-ranked men’s volleyball team won a tough four-set CUNYAC match against rival Hunter College on Tuesday night in the ARC Arena.

The visiting Hawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first set and controlled most of the action until Baruch rallied late to get as close as 29-28. Hunter would take the first set on an attack error to clinch the 30-28 set victory.

During the second set, the Bearcats stormed out to a 19-14 advantage and cruised to the 30-22 set victory with a hitting percentage of .375.

Hunter turned the momentum back in their favor to open the third set and led 17-11. Baruch rallied to tie the match at 21, as both rivals exchanged points during a thrilling battle that was eventually tied at 30.

Hunter would take a 31-30 lead on a Jeremy Grubler kill (assist Ripoll-Cid), but the Bearcats won the next three points with Pablo Oliveira notching the winning kill (assist Santos) to earn a hard fought 33-31 third set victory.

The Bearcats took control in the fourth set and led 27-19. Hunter rallied by collecting eight of the next 10 points to get as close as 29-27. Baruch would win the match on an attack error for the 30-27 score to clinch the victory between the two fierce CUNY Athletic Conference rivals.

Pablo Oliveira and Eryk Kowalski (.500) led Baruch (26-2, 13-0 CUNYAC) with 16 kills each, while Santos Rivera totaled 14 kills, six digs and four block assists. Ivan Andujar had another solid evening with 54 assists and nine total digs.

Eric Barty led Hunter College (15-8, 11-2 CUNYAC) with 18 kills and Christopher Newcomb had 16 kills (.344). Zacarias Ripoll-Cid finished with 44 assists and eight total digs.

The men’s volleyball team will return to action on Thursday night with a 7:00 pm home contest against SUNY-New Paltz.
