UPDATED BOX SCORE

The baseball team lost 15-5 to the College of Staten Island in the first day of the 2010 CUNYAC Baseball Championships at MCU Park in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn.

The fourth-seeded Bearcats (11-21) will next play tomorrow, Friday, April 30, with a 1:00 pm double-elimination contest against third-seeded CCNY, which lost to John Jay College (11-27) by the score of 9-8.

The Staten Island Dolphins (28-9) advance to the winner’s bracket game tomorrow to play John Jay. (Complete Tournament Schedule Down Below)

The Dolphins jumped out to the early 2-0 lead, but the Bearcats rallied to score three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the 3-2 advantage. Thomas Daly smacked an RBI double, while Richard Melendez also hit a double for two RBI to help the Bearcats surprise one of the region’s top teams.

The Dolphins scored a run in their bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the game (3-3), and it would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when they blew the game wide open by scoring six runs on six total hits and five fielding errors.

The big sixth inning gave Staten Island a 9-3 advantage, which the Bearcats could not recover to suffer their first defeat in the double-elimination tournament.

The Bearcats must now avoid a second loss or face elimination from the tournament.
