The women’s volleyball team defeated the City College of New York, 3-1, in an exciting CUNYAC home match played on Tuesday evening in the ARC Arena.

The visiting Beavers (3-5, 1-2 CUNYAC) won the opening set by the score of 25-22, but the Bearcats (5-3, 2-1 CUNYAC) regrouped to win the next three sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-21.

Lauren Hayden led the Bearcats to victory with a solid all around performance on the court with 14 kills (.448 hitting percentage) and 13 total digs.

Christine Pierre had another solid match with 12 kills. Earlier in the day, for the second straight week, Pierre was named the CUNYAC Player of the Week.

Martina Micko and Brittany Sorensen contributed six kills each. Melinda Santiago collected 36 assists and 13 digs, while Posey Wilson kept the team consistently in the match all evening with a season-high 29 digs on the defensive end.

Melissa Blass (.393) and Ruth Reyes led the visiting Beavers with 11 kills each. Alexis Kinsman recorded 32 assists and 14 total digs.

The women’s volleyball team will return to action this weekend by competing at the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh, New York. The Bearcats will open play on Friday, September 17 against Buffalo State (2:00 pm) and St. Lawrence University (8:00 pm).
