SUNDAY, JANUARY 30

The #15-ranked men’s volleyball team lost their two matches on Sunday in the final day of the Golden Dome Classic hosted by Rutgers-Newark in Newark, New Jersey.

The visiting Bearcats (2-7) began playing the Division I volleyball program of Rutgers-Newark and started with a 25-23 first set victory. However, the Scarlet Raiders responded with solid hitting to win the next three sets with scores of 25-21 (.423), 25-15 (.722) and 25-18 (.444) to record the victory.

Eryk Kowalski (11 kills) and Pablo Oliveira (10 kills) led the Bearcats in the attack, while Jesus Echevarria contributed 29 assists, six digs and five kills.
Nick Smith led the team with nine total digs.

Marcin Midura led Rutgers-Newark with 15 kills (.500), six digs and five blocks.

In the second match against #7ranked NYU, the Bearcats suffered a three set 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 defeat. The Violets of NYU recorded a .313 hitting percentage for 37 total kills, while the Bearcats had a .165 percentage with 40 total kills.

Oliveira led Baruch again with 15 kills and nine digs, while Kowalski notched 12 kills with a .550 hitting percentage.
Jack McKee contributed five kills and eight total digs in the loss.

The men’s volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday, February 1st, with a pair of matches to begin their home schedule in the ARC Arena. The will open play with a CUNYAC contest against CCNY at 6:00 pm, followed by an 8:00 pm non-conference contest against Rutgers-Newark.
 
SATURDAY, JANUARY 29

The #15-ranked men’s volleyball team split their two matches on Saturday in the first day of the Golden Dome Classic hosted by Rutgers-Newark in Newark, New Jersey.

The Bearcats (2-5) began the tournament against #10-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (5-0) and jumped out to a two set lead with scores of 25-19 and 25-21, but Stevens rallied in dramatic fashion to win the next three with scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 15-13 to record the come-from-behind victory.

Stevens notched a .318 hitting percentage (66 kills), compared to .274 (61 kills) by Baruch.  The two teams were tied at 8-all in the deciding fifth set, but Stevens pulled away late with David Evans ending the match with a kill off an assist from Brandt Grobeis.

Baruch’s 2010 AVCA All-American duo of
Pablo Oliveira (21 kills) and Eryk Kowalski (18 kills) led the offensive attack all afternoon, while Jesus Echevarria dished out 47 assists, six kills (.444) and two aces in the tough loss. 

Evans finished with 17 kills (.424) and Grobeis totaled 56 assists to keep the Ducks undefeated.

In the second match against #5-ranked Rivier (8-2), the two teams played a very competitive game with Rivier winning the opening set, 25-23. Baruch responded to win the second set, 25-16 (14 kills, .357), but Rivier won the third again by the score of 25-23 (13 kills, .303).

Baruch dominated the fourth set to win 25-17 (12 kills, .364), and Pablo Oliveira carried the team to victory in the fifth set with four total kills, including match point, for a 15-8 (eight kills, .538) deciding set victory.

Kowalski led Baruch with 22 kills (.472). He also recorded six digs and three blocks. Oliveira finished the match with 20 kills, six digs and five blocks.

Echevarria recorded 53 assists for a Saturday total of 100. He also notched six kills (.417) and five total digs.

The Bearcats also received solid numbers in the victory from
Vincent Cruz (nine kills) and Ray Satagaj (seven kills, .583).
