The baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to the Blue Devils of Fredonia State on Friday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Bearcats dropped the first game by the score of 9-6 to their opponents from the SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

Fredonia jumped out to a 4-0 lead after batting through their top half of the fifth inning, but the Bearcats quickly responded with four runs to tie the game in their bottom half of the fifth.

Anthony Melendez hit an RBI ground out to score John Yuksekol, followed by Alvin Mata hitting an RBI single to score Justin Torres. A catcher’s error allowed Richard Melendez to score the third run and Mata eventually scored on a wild pitch for the 4-4 tie after five innings.

Fredonia broke open the game with four more runs in their next at-bat in the top of the sixth inning and added another in the seventh for a 9-4 advantage.

Anthony Melendez smacked his third home run of the season for a two run shot in the ninth inning to cut the score to 9-6, but the Bearcats could not get any closer to suffer their first loss.

In the second game, the Bearcats lost 10-3 and scored their only runs of the contest in the seventh inning.

Pooti Ben Pradubsri hit an RBI single to score Marcos Mejia, followed by Richard Melendez recording a single for two RBI to score Jonathan Ovalles and Pradubsri to account for their three runs in the game.

The Bearcats will continue their busy Florida schedule on Saturday, March 12, with a 12:00 pm non-conference doubleheader against the University of Dubuque from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC).
