Baseball Team Falls to SUNY-IT (8-3)

The baseball team lost an 8-3 non-conference contest to SUNY-IT on Friday afternoon at the SUNY-Old Westbury Baseball Complex in Old Westbury, New York.

The Baruch Bearcats (3-8) jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning with
Alvin Mata hitting a sacrifice fly RBI to score John Yuksekol for the early 1-0 lead.

SUNY-IT (4-7) responded by scoring three runs on five total hits in the third inning to take over the lead at 3-1. They added two more runs in the sixth inning on three hits and one fielding error by the Bearcats for a 5-1 advantage.

The Bearcats rallied in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two runs to cut the score to 5-3.
Manuel Guerrero smacked a two-RBI single to centerfield to score Marcos Mejia and Jonathan Ovalles.

SUNY-IT from the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) scored three insurance runs in the top half of the ninth inning and shut down the Bearcats in their final at-bat to post the victory in the first-ever baseball contest between the two teams.

Mejia and
Joshua Webb had two singles each in the tough loss. Sami Zantout had a solid appearance in long relief by pitching 5.2 innings with only one earned run allowed.

Patrick Baker gets the victory for SUNY-IT by going seven innings with three earned runs and five strikeouts. Five different players had two hits apiece for SUNY-IT.

The baseball team will return to action on Saturday, March 19, with a non-conference contest against Albertus Magnus College of Connecticut. First pitch at the SUNY-Old Westbury Baseball Complex in Long Island is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
