Oliveira Tallies 40 Kills to Defeat #12 Emmanuel, Follows Up with 19 Kills vs Endicott

The #8-ranked men’s volleyball team traveled to Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday to compete in a tri-match hosted by #12-ranked Emmanuel College.

The Bearcats won the opening match against Emmanuel in five sets with scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-11 to defeat the Saints for the second time this season.

Pablo Oliveira notched a career-high 40 kills with a hitting percentage of .583 to help the visiting Bearcats earn a five-set victory against an opponent that is also affiliated with the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA).

The 40 total kills in the current 25-point set is believed to be a record and among one of the Top 10 performances in recent years among Division III players.

Ray Satagaj (8 kills, .615), Takeshi Kawahigashi (9 digs) and Jesus Echevarria (56 assists) also had a solid effort to help the team record the exciting five-set victory.

In the second match against Endicott College, the Bearcats improved their season record to 28-12 by sweeping with scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.  

Oliveira totaled 19 kills (.382) to finish Saturday afternoon in Boston with 59 total.

Nick Smith had a solid all-around effort with seven kills (.308) and 12 digs on the defensive end, while Steven Coniglio recorded six kills (.308). Echevarria also finished a busy afternoon with 37 assists in the second match.

The men’s volleyball team will now turn their attention to the CUNYAC Championship Tournament and seek to win their fifth conference title in the past six years. Baruch will host the semifinal and final rounds on Friday, March 25 in the ARC Arena (Free Admission).

The Bearcats received a quarterfinal round bye and will advance to the semifinal round on Friday. The entire tournament schedule and seeding will be announced on Monday by CUNYAC.
