#7 Bearcats Fall to #13 Stevens in Five-Set Thriller

The #7-ranked men’s volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to the #13-ranked Ducks from the Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday night in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats (30-13) on Senior Night won the opening set, 25-22, but the visiting Ducks (17-11) responded by winning the next two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-19. The Bearcats tied the match by winning the fourth set, 25-22, but Stevens earned the overall non-conference victory by hitting .900 to win the fifth, 15-13.

The result marks the third consecutive time that the two teams have played a match that lasted five sets.

Eryk Kowalski led Baruch with 20 kills (.457), while Pablo Oliveira tallied 11 kills. Jesus Echevarria had another solid match with 48 assists, four blocks and three kills (333).

Stevens received an all-around team effort with four players notching at least 10 kills. David Evans led the Ducks with a team-high 13 kills, while Ryan Seifert recorded 12 kills (.526). Brandt Grobeis dished out 48 assists on the evening.

Prior to the match, the men’s volleyball team and Head Coach Allison Stack honored seniors Kowalski, Oliveira,
Kirill Yagnetinskiy and Takeshi Kawahigashi.

The Baruch Bearcats will finish their 2011 regular season schedule on Wednesday, March 30, with a 7:00 pm non-conference match at #15-ranked Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
