4/1/2011 1:56:00 PM

SCHEDULING NOTE: Due to the recent weather and the effect on fields, the CUNYAC home doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 2 versus CCNY has been postponed. The doubleheader is rescheduled to Sunday, April 3, at 12:00 pm, at MCU Park in Coney Island.

BOX SCORE

The baseball team defeated Yeshiva University, 9-6, in a CUNYAC contest on a cold and drizzly Thursday night at Taft High School in the Bronx.

With the result, the Bearcats improve to 6-11 overall and 3-1 in CUNYAC, while Yeshiva drops to 3-11 overall and 3-7 in CUNYAC. Please note that Yeshiva is an associate member of CUNYAC in the sport of baseball only.

Jason Valentin earned the pitching victory (7.1IP, 3ER, 9H, 9K), while Jesus Izarra (1.2IP, 2K) recorded his second save of the regular season.

The visiting Bearcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings of play. They scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by
Manuel Guerrero, while one run scored on an error and another off a wild pitch.

They scored twice in the fourth inning. Guerrero hit another RBI single and came around to eventually score on a fielding error by the Maccabees of Yeshiva.

The Maccabees kept the game interesting by scoring the next four runs to cut the score to 6-4, but the visiting Bearcats responded with three runs in the seventh inning.

Thomas Daly scored a run on a fielding error and Marcos Mejia smacked an RBI triple to score Richard Melendez. They scored their ninth and final run on a sacrifice fly by Guerrero to score Mejia from third base.

The Maccabees threatened again and were able to score a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings, but Izarra shut them down from scoring any more runs in relief to help the team walk away with the 9-6 conference victory.

Overall, the Bearcats scored nine runs on nine hits and committed five fielding errors, while the Maccabees finished with six runs on nine hits and committed five fielding errors.

The baseball team will return to action on Sunday, April 3, with a 12:00 pm CUNYAC home doubleheader against the Beavers of CCNY at MCU Park in Coney Island.
