Baseball Team Splits DH vs CCNY (Win 3-0, Lose 7-3)

The baseball team split a CUNYAC doubleheader against The City College of New York Beavers on Sunday afternoon at the Bronx Community College baseball field.

The Bearcats (7-12, 4-2 CUNYAC) won the opening game behind a solid pitching performance by
Jesus Izarra for a 3-0 shutout, but lost the second game to the Beavers (4-18, 2-2 CUNYAC) by the score of 7-3.

Izarra won his fourth game of the regular season with a complete game effort of seven innings pitched, eight strikeouts and six hits allowed.

The Bearcats scored once in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings of play.

Anthony Melendez smacked his fourth home run of the season in the second inning, while the second run resulted in a double by Marcos Mejia to score Richard Melendez. Alvin Mata hit an RBI single to score Justin Torres for the third and final run.

Overall, Baruch totaled three runs on six hits with no errors, while CCNY was scoreless with six hits and one fielding error. The first game lasted only one hour and 17 minutes.

In the second game, CCNY jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in their first at-bat and led 5-3 after three innings of play. They scored two more insurance runs in their final at-bat to hold on to the 7-3 victory.

The Bearcats scored a run in the first inning and two in the second inning to account for their only three runs of the game. Mata scored the first run on a CCNY fielding error.
Manuel Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to score Richard Melendez for the second run and Mata tripled to score Ben Pradubsri for the third run of the second game.

Overall, Baruch totaled three runs on five hits with no fielding errors, while CCNY was victorious with seven runs, nine hits and two fielding errors.

The baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, April 5, with a 4:00 pm non-conference home game against SUNY-Old Westbury to be played Bronx Community College baseball field.
