Women's Volleyball Defeats Div. II St. Michael's, Fall to Clarkson in Opener

The women’s volleyball team began the season on Friday afternoon with a pair of matches in the first day of the North Country Classic being jointly hosted by Clarkson & St. Lawrence Universities.

In the opening match in Potsdam, New York the Bearcats suffered a competitive three-set loss to the home team Clarkson by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-22. Neither team was able to build any significant leads, but in the end Clarkson closed out the win with very tight scores.

Junior Lauren Hayden (Parker, Colorado) led the Baruch attack with a team-high six kills, while sophomore Rebecca Peralta (Bronx, NY) finished with four. Junior Melinda Santiago (East Patchogue, NY) dished out eight assists and two-time CUNYAC Libero of the Year senior Posey Wilson (Fayetteville, Arkansas) was tops defensively with 15 digs. Junior Carissa Oliveira (Vista, California) notched four service aces.

Clarkson, who was picked to finish first in the Liberty League Conference and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2010, was led in the attack by Sara Artus (St. Regis, NY) and Bailey Walker (Centennial, Colorado) with 10 kills apiece.

In the second match against Division II Saint Michael’s College from Burlington, Vermont the Bearcats overcame an opening set 25-19 loss by winning the last three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 to defeat their higher-level opponent. 

Freshman Jessica Wu (Cerritos, California) and Peralta each recorded 13 kills, while Hayden capped off a solid afternoon with seven kills. Santiago helped lead the successful attack by dishing out 41 assists and Wilson was top defensively again with 22 digs.

The next two Baruch matches on Saturday will shift to St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York as the Bearcats will play the hosts St. Lawrence (11:00 am) and R.I.T. (1:00 pm).
