WestConn Edges Bearcats in Five Set Thriller (25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 13-15)

The women’s volleyball team lost a marathon five-set match to Western Connecticut State University in a thrilling non-conference contest played on Tuesday evening in Danbury, Connecticut.

The Bearcats began with a 25-23 opening set victory, but nicknamed WestConn battled to tie the match with a 25-17 victory. The Bearcats prevailed in the third set with a narrow 25-23 victory, but WestConn responded by winning with the same narrow 25-23 score in the fourth to force a tie-breaking fifth set.

The two teams battled back-and-forth, but WestConn from the Little East Conference was able to squeeze out the highly competitive victory with a tight 15-13 score to win in five.

Freshman Jessica Wu (Cerritos, California), who was named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, had another solid effort with 19 kills and 18 digs. Junior Lauren Hayden (Parker, Colorado), who was also honored this week as the CUNYAC Player of the Week, had a great match with 15 kills and three blocks.

Junior Megan Moody (Anderson, Texas) led the offensive push with 26 assists, while junior Melinda Santiago (East Patchogue, NY) contributed 17 assists. Senior Posey Wilson (Fayetteville, Arkansas) had an impressive 35 digs on the defensive end and junior Carissa Oliveira (Vista, California) contributed three service aces.

The Bearcats (2-3) will continue their busy early season road schedule on Thursday, September 8, with a 7:00 pm non-conference road match in Hackettstown, New Jersey against the Cyclones of Centenary College from the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
