Hunter Hawks Upset #14 Baruch Bearcats

The #14-ranked men’s volleyball team lost in three sets to rival Hunter College in a CUNYAC match played on Tuesday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York City.

The Hawks (6-7, 4-0 CUNYAC) hit for a .330 hitting percentage (43 kills) compared to .198 (37 kills) by the visiting Bearcats (7-6, 3-1 CUNYAC) in the second meeting of the season between the two teams separated by only a few stops on the #6 Lexington Avenue Subway Line.

Earlier this season, the Bearcats defeated the Hawks in five sets (19-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13) at home on January 25 in a non-conference match. The two teams are scheduled to play their second CUNYAC match on Thursday, March 22, at 6:00 pm at home in the ARC Arena.


Vincent Cruz had a solid evening for the Bearcats with 16 kills hitting .625. He also contributed four blocks.

Steven Coniglio notched six kills hitting .600, while Danny Olson dished out 33 assists. Taylor Higgs led the defensive effort with 10 digs and Nick Smith had three aces. Jack McKee finished with six kills and three blocks.

Chris Newcomb led Hunter with 12 kills, eight digs and four blocks.

The Bearcats will regroup to prepare for a busy Saturday, March 3, with three matches on the schedule in two different locations.

They will begin the day at the CUNYAC Multi-Match hosted by CCNY’s Nat Holman Gymnasium with morning matches against Lehman (9:00 am) and CCNY (11:00 am).

Later in the day, at 6:00 pm, they will return home to the ARC Arena for a marquee non-conference home match against #2-ranked and 2011 National Runner Up Springfield College.
