Baseball Team Loses One Run Contest to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (8-7)

The baseball team lost an 8-7 contest to the Mariners from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a non-conference contest played on Thursday afternoon in King’s Point, New York.


Steve Hession led the Bearcats at the plate by batting a perfect 5-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and one RBI. Alvin Mata also had a big game with two hits, including a ninth inning home run, to finish with four RBI.

The Bearcats led early with two runs scored in the first inning. Steve Hession led off with a triple and Alvin Mata brought him home with an RBI single. Mata later came around to score on an RBI ground out by
Thomas Daly.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tied the game in the second inning and added a run in the third to lead 3-2.  However, the Bearcats came back to tie the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Hession to score
Aldo Altamirano.

The Mariners took the lead again with three runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the eighth inning en route to the competitive home victory.

The Bearcats did get close in the ninth inning on Alvin Mata’s two run homer to cut the score to 8-7. They even managed to get two more runners on base in attempting to tie the game, but fell short in suffering the loss against an opponent from the Landmark Conference.

The baseball team will begin their CUNYAC schedule on Saturday, March 24, with a home doubleheader against John Jay College of Criminal Justice. First pitch at Bronx Community College Baseball Field will take place at 12:00 pm.
