Baseball Team Takes Two From Yeshiva to Improve to 4-0 in CUNYAC

The baseball team swept two games from Yeshiva University in a CUNYAC home doubleheader played on Sunday afternoon at Bronx Community College baseball field.

The Bearcats won with scores of 16-3 and 7-6 to improve to 11-10 overall and 4-0 in the CUNYAC. Yeshiva, an associate member of CUNYAC in the sport of baseball, drop to 1-22 overall and 0-9 in the CUNYAC.

In the first game, the Bearcats pounded out 16 runs on 10 hits. They blew the game wide open in the third inning by scoring eight runs on five hits.


Steve Hession led the Bearcats in the opening game by batting 3-for-3 with two doubles, one triple, three runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. Thomas Daly batted 2-for-4, with a grand slam home run in the high-scoring third inning. Overall, Daly finished with five total RBI.

Justin Torres also had a solid game with a two run homer in the second inning. Aldo Altamirano finished with three runs scored.

Jesus Izarra raises his season record on the mound to 4-0 by pitching six innings with eight strikeouts, six hits allowed and one earned run.

In the second game, the Bearcats needed a late rally to avoid defeat. They were trailing 6-4 heading into their final at-bat of the seventh inning, but fought back by scoring three runs to come from behind to win, 7-6.

Steve Hession began the rally with a walk and advanced to third on an
Alvin Mata single. Mata stole second base and Thomas Daly loaded the bases with a walk. Aldo Altamirano then smacked a single to score one run, while two others came around to score on the same play via a Yeshiva fielding error to clinch the exciting comeback.

Alvin Mata finished batting 3-for-3, with three runs scored.
Yancy Taveras totaled two RBI in the victory.

Paul Perez, the CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week, recorded the victory in relief by pitching one inning with two hits allowed and no earned runs. With the victory, Perez also improves to 4-0 on the season.

The baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, April 3, with a 3:30 non-conference single contest at FDU-Florham in Madison, New Jersey.
