BOX SCORE

The Baruch College Bearcats defeated St. Joseph’s College of Long Island, 6-4, in an ECAC Metro Championship first round game played on Thursday afternoon in Patchogue, New York.

With the result, the Bearcats advance to the semifinals scheduled for Saturday, May 12, at 4:00 pm versus FDU-Florham in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The Bearcats also win their 22nd game, which continues to set the team record for all-time wins in a season. St. Joseph’s finishes their season with a 21-22 overall record.

“It was a great win for Jesus Izarra, a great win for our seniors, and the program," said Head Coach Jose Torres. "We played great defense by turning three double plays that shut down rallies. We had one big offensive inning and Jesus Izarra made it stand the rest of the way.”

St. Joseph’s College from the
Skyline Conference scored a run in the second inning for the early 1-0 lead, but the visiting Bearcats exploded for five runs on five hits in the third inning to lead 5-1.

Alvin Mata smacked a two run single, while Thomas Daly and Yancy Taveras each had a one run double. Justin Torres hit an RBI ground out to score Taveras to complete the five-run inning.

St. Joseph’s scored two runs in the seventh inning to get as close as 5-3, but the Bearcats added a run in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice by Justin Torres to score Yancy Taveras again to raise the lead to 6-3.

St. Joseph’s rallied in their final at-bat by scoring a run and getting two runners on base, but Baruch ace
Jesus Izarra managed to get the final out on a ground out to first base to clinch the postseason victory of 6-4.

Izarra pitched a complete game with five strikeouts to raise his record on the mound to 8-1. Alvin Mata and Justin Torres finished with two RBI each, while four different players had two hits each.
