#9 Men's Volleyball Defeat Hunter in Four to Begin CUNYAC Schedule on Winning Note

The #9-ranked men’s volleyball team defeated rival Hunter College Hawks in four sets in a very exciting CUNYAC contest played on Thursday night in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats won with scores of 25-17, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23 to raise their record to 6-1 overall and start 1-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Hawks drop to 1-7 and 1-1 in the CUNYAC.

The Bearcats took the opening set hitting .423 for a convincing 25-17 victory. They finished the match hitting .243 with 56 total kills.

The visiting Hawks had their best set in their victorious third hitting .391, but overall they struggled this evening hitting .130 with 45 kills.

After the Hawks won the third, they trailed 19-13 in the fourth, but rallied back to tie it at 21 to electrify the large crowd in the gym.

The fourth set was later tied at 23, but a kill by
Steven Coniglio and an attack error by the Hawks helped clinch the victory between the two teams that have played against each other in the past seven conference finals.

Four different players had double-figure kills this evening led by Coniglio (13 kills, .524, five blocks),
Chris Kaimis (11 kills, .588), Nick Smith (11 kills) and Martin Joksimovik (10 kills).

Rookie
Brian Coniglio dished out a career-high 48 assists, totaled four digs and recorded five blocks.

Matthew Ng led the Hawks with 14 kills and three digs.

The men’s volleyball team will return to action Saturday hosting one of the most competitive volleyball invitationals in perhaps Div. III history with seven of the current 15 nationally-ranked teams descending upon campus. (FULL SCHEDULE)

The Bearcats play #11 Elmira (4:00 pm) and #14 Vassar (6:00 pm) in their two matches Saturday afternoon.
