2013 Men's Volleyball Senior Night

#7 Bearcats Defeat York, Upset #4 Stevens on Senior & Alumni Day in ARC Arena

The #7-ranked men’s volleyball team won a pair of matches on Saturday as part of Senior & Alumni Day in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats began by defeating York College in four sets to finish the regular season CUNYAC portion of their schedule with an undefeated 14-0 record.

The Bearcats won 25-16, 25-16 for the 2-0 lead, but York came back to win the third set, 25-23. The Bearcats regrouped in the fourth, winning convincingly 25-14, for the conference victory.

The Bearcats totaled 53 kills hitting .284, while the Cardinals had 40 kills hitting .144.


Steven Coniglio led the attack with 10 kills hitting .643 with four blocks. Brady Ambro (.692) and Gabe Rivera (eight digs) finished with nine kills each.

Aviv Elias received the start on Senior Day and pounded eight kills to go along with three aces. Scott Standring dished out 37 assists and collected five digs.

In the second match against #4-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology, the team honored their four seniors (Aviv Elias,
George Chave, Gabe Rivera, Martin Joksimovik) before first serve.

The emotional ceremony carried into the match as the Bearcats quickly went up 2-0 with scores of 25-19, 25-21. The visiting Ducks narrowly won the third set, 25-23, but the Bearcats hit .409 in the fourth set (25-17) to win the battle of Top 10 ranked teams.

The Bearcats totaled 49 kills hitting .262, while the Ducks had 47 kills struggling with a hitting percentage of .182.

Steven Coniglio had another big match with 15 kills hitting .429.

Joksimovik tallied 12 kills hitting .588. Standring was busy again with 43 assists and Chave totaled six digs.

The men’s volleyball team will begin their postseason on Tuesday, April 9, with a 7:00 pm CUNYAC quarterfinal playoff match against Medgar Evers College in the ARC Arena. (CLICK HERE – ENTIRE PLAYOFF SCHEDULE)
