Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

MVB Defeats NJCU in Home Opener, Team Honors Tommy Leslein Pre-Match

The men's volleyball team swept the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University in a non-conference contest and home opener on Thursday night.

Prior to tonight's match, the athletic department hosted a commemorative ceremony to honor Tommy Leslein, who passed away in 2018 during a car accident. Leslein's family donated a new volleyball net and pole in honor of Tommy, who was a Bearcat in 2016.

The Bearcats started the match slow trailing 7-5 and were later losing 11-10, but reeled off 15 of the next 19 points to win, 25-15.

Both teams were tied at 16 in the second set but solid hitting behind a .452 hitting percentage helped the Bearcats win, 25-20.

They clinched the sweep leading from start to finish in the third, including up 18-9 at one point, en route to winning 25-19.

Artem Zinkin powered the Bearcats with 11 kills and Meni Musheyev had seven kills with three blocks.

Edward Grinberg (22 assists) and Stallone Shankar (13 assists) each had double-figure assists, while Steven Lopez and Rabsang Andrugtsang had seven digs each in the team's fifth straight home win dating back to last season.

Evan Takos notched three aces.

Overall, they totaled 39 kills hitting .298 compared to 25 kills and a .062 hitting percentage by the visitors from New Jersey.

Jonathan Andrews led the Gothic Knights with nine kills and three blocks.
