MVB Defeats John Jay 3-1 in Close Battle (23-25,25-20,25-23,25-21)

The Bearcats and the John Jay Bloodhounds faced off in a CUNYAC matchup in the ARC Arena on Thursday night.

It was a back-and-forth affair, but the squad sealed the victory in four sets (23-25,25-20,25-23,25-21) and now hold an overall record of 8-7 and a CUNYAC record of 7-0.

 

In the first set, the score was close for nearly the entire way. The Bearcats had a 10-9 lead, but then John Jay scored two consecutive points to take a lead and maintained their lead until later in the set, when the squad took an 18-17 lead on a kill by Ryan Oommen. 
 

The Bearcats then had a 22-20 lead late in the set, but with a 5-1 run from the Bloodhounds they won 25-23. 

The second set saw a change in momentum that helped get the Beracats back on track. John Jay took a 5-0 lead to start the set until the run was snapped after a kill by Kory Lingenfelter fthat was assisted from Ryan Oommen. 

John Jay was in front of the Bearcats until Ari Osmanaj gave the squad their first lead of the set at 16-15 on a kill assisted by Oommen. They went on a 9-6 run to win the set 25-21. 

The team trailed by as much as five points early in the third set. At 19-18, they took their first lead of the set on a kill by Noah Pak. They sealed the set win with a 6-4 run. 

The fourth set saw the Bearcats take a 3-0 lead to start followed by John Jay taking the lead at 5-4 and going on a run of their own. The score was tied at 18-a-piece followed by the squad finishing the match on a 7-3 run started on a kill by Oommen who was assisted by Pak. The Beracats wo 25-21 to clinch the victory. 


Jimmy Thinlay recorded 36 assists for the Bloodhounds.

The Bearcats' next battle will be an away match against their CUNYAC and Lexington Avenue rivals, the Hawks of Hunter College at the Hunter Sportsplex on Tuesday, March 11, at 6 p.m.
