Mount Saint Mary Rally Late to Defeat the Bearcats (60-53)

The women’s basketball team lost a 60-53 non-conference home contest to Mount Saint Mary College on Monday night in the ARC Arena.

The visitors from Newburgh, New York overturned a 36-22 deficit with 14:56 remaining by going on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to one (36-35).

The Bearcats (5-3) quickly responded with a pair of free throws by Kalea Davis and a fast break lay up by Karlee Whipple to increase the lead to 40-35, but the Blue Knights came back again by scoring the next six points to take their first lead of the second half (41-40) on a basket by Shannon Sangster with 5:58 remaining.

The Blue Knights (5-4) kept the momentum on their side and closed out the victory by connecting on 12 free throws in the final 3:41 to take the road victory.

Neither team shot the ball well this evening (MSM 25 percent, Baruch 30 percent) with only 19 total field goals each, but the Bearcats turned the ball over 31 times.

Mount Saint Mary were stuck at 11 points for a seven minute stretch of the first half before making a late mini-run to trail at halftime, 24-19.

Karlee Whipple (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Kalea Davis (13 points, 14 rebounds) each had a double-double this evening, while Awa Diop missed one with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Monique Salmon dished out a game-high eight assists.

Chrissy Zrowska (10-12 free throws) led four Mount Saint Mary players in double-figure scoring with 18 points. Shannon Sangster had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Bearcats will next return to action on Monday, December 29, by competing at the Salem State Holiday Tournament in Massachusetts. They will open play with a 1:00 pm contest against Husson University from Maine.
