The women's tennis team fell just short in defeating Hunter College, 5-4, in an exciting four hour and 30 minute showdown on Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Queens.

The Bearcats (4-2, 2-1 CUNYAC) started by winning two of the three doubles to take the lead, but the Hawks (5-2, 3-0 CUNYAC), winners of the last eight CUNYAC women's tennis titles, fought back by winning four of the six singles to narrowly escape with the 5-4 victory.

The double teams of Irina Piskunova (Uzbekistan/H.S. #37) and Mariam Mkrtchyan (Armenia/P.M. #1) at #2, along with Shalanda Graham (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and Mariya Korobkova (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) at #3, helped the Bearcats start the afternoon on a high note with their respective double victories.

In other team news, Irina Piskunova and Hunter's Evgeniya Kim both shared Co-Player of the Week honors in CUNYAC Women's Tennis.

Piskunova won all six of her matches (three singles, three doubles) during the Bearcats' 3-0 week (2-0 CUNYAC). She defeated Staten Island's Karina Zenkova and John Jay's Lauren Mallon by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores at No. 2 singles in conference play, and Farmingdale State's Jessica Gentile, 6-3 and 6-4.

She went perfect in doubles play (1-0 at No. 1, 2-0 at No. 2) with Mirian Mkrtchyan on the week, as well.

The Bearcats will return to action this Friday with conference home match against the City College of New York. First serve at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Queens is scheduled for the revised time of 4:00 pm.
