Defense Leads Bearcats Past CCNY, 61-39

The women’s basketball team defeated the Beavers of City College of New York, 61-39, in a CUNYAC home contest on Wednesday night in the ARC Arena.

The defense limited the visiting Beavers to two points in the opening 13 minutes and only eight points (3-of-26 shooting) total in the first half. Baruch shot 44 percent (15-34) in the first half with Megan Bouwens scoring 10 points.

During the second half, CCNY scored the first seven points, but the Bearcats (12-3, 5-0 CUNYAC) continued the defensive pressure to build the advantage to as much as 27 points (45-18) to comfortably close out the conference victory to record their sixth straight win.

In addition, they stretch their overall CUNYAC win streak (tournament & regular season) to 25 games.

Bouwens led Baruch again with 15 points (7-11 fg), while Monique Salmon (six assists) and Anika Sierk finished with 10 points each.

Ashley Straughn led CCNY (4-10, 2-3 CUNYAC) with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. 

The women’s basketball team will return to action on Friday night with a 5:30 pm home CUNYAC contest in the ARC Arena against Lehman College.
