Men's Basketball Shoot 52 Percent to Defeat John Jay College, 83-63

The men’s basketball team led from start to finish to record an 83-63 CUNYAC home victory against John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Wednesday night in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats scored the first 11 points and continued to lead by double-digits the rest of the first half to build a 45-30 halftime advantage.

During the start of the second half, Lionel Hilaire hit a lay up for a quick 17 point lead, but the visiting Bloodhounds rallied with an 11-2 run to trail by only eight points (49-41) with 15:27 remaining.

The Bearcats regrouped during a time out and responded with Hilaire connecting on back-to-back three-pointers to build the lead back up to 14 points (55-41). The Bearcats controlled the momentum the rest of the game and allowed John Jay to only get as close as 79-63 with 1:43 left.

With the victory, the Bearcats end a three game losing streak to improve to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in CUNYAC. John Jay drops to 1-18 overall and 1-8 in CUNYAC.

During the early part of the first half, junior guard Tammer Farid connected on a three-pointer to break the Baruch men’s basketball all-time career three-point record with 164 total treys. He broke the record previously held by Scott Holloway with 163.

Hilaire led all Baruch scorers with 23 points (5-6 3fg), while Chris Beauchamp had 10 points and two steals.

Mickey Abbatiello (15 points, 6-8 fg) and Arki Wisnu (13 points, 4-6 fg) came off the bench to give the Bearcats a big boost in the scoring column. George Kunkel totaled 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

Vaughn Mason led John Jay with a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds.

The men’s basketball team will return to action on Friday night with a tip-off time of 8:00 pm against conference rival Hunter College.

Prior to the game, the annual men’s basketball alumni game will take place with an estimated start time of 7:00 pm (immediately following the conclusion of the women’s game).
